You Should Stop Ignoring This

Girls are shaving everything nowadays to be completely hair free. This Nash Grier standard of completely smooth bodies is not realistic for a woman trying to make it through the harsh winter months. Body hair is completely natural once puberty hits, and we’re trying to maintain a prepubescent body image.

This paper is another piece of social science evidence reinforcing the case for having more teachers of color and for training teachers to be more culturally responsive. We’ve reported on instances of implicit bias by white teachers, even toward preschool students, that black students are more often recommended for gifted programs by teachers of color and that students of all races prefer teachers of color.

According to Kant, the reasoning being – today, we’d say the intelligent being – has infinite worth or dignity, whereas the unreasoning or unintelligent one has none. His arguments are more sophisticated, but essentially he arrives at the same conclusion as Aristotle: there are natural masters and natural slaves, and intelligence is what distinguishes them.

When words wound, to borrow critical race theorist Richard Delgado’s phrase, the first injury is confusion. How do we understand the link between the word and the wound? Is it the physical manifestation of intention that injures us? Or is it the historical context and origin—the discursive nature—of a word that lacerates our sense of belonging in this world? What if the language used was our own language appropriated against us?

I never asked myself these questions when a white man jeered “Allahu Akbar” at me on Fifth Avenue.

#BeingBlackandMuslim means having to recite a verse from the Qur’an to non-Black Muslims to prove that you’re a Muslim.
